What do you understand by a “DEHUMIDIFIER”?

It is a machine which helps to reduce the moisture content in the air in a specified volume. Dehumidifier is a device which brings down the humidity present in the air. It is very similar to an Air Conditioning system. Dehumidifiers are used to control the moisture in the air and maintain a safe and healthy environment.

Dehumidifiers are of two types:

  1. Condensation Type
  2. Desiccant Type

A condensation dehumidifier is a system which removes the humidity from the room in the form of water. A condensation dehumidifier uses a refrigerant which helps in condensing this moisture into water. This water is stored in a tank inside the machine which is discarded later. These machines also have an option by connecting a drainage pipe through which the condensed water is thrown out. The dry air (Dehumidified air) is then released back into the room.

This is the concept of a condensation dehumidifier.

Condensation dehumidifiers can be of various types:

  1. Domestic type
  2. Commercial type
  3. Industrial type

The domestic condensation dehumidifier is used mainly for homes and offices. These are for small sized rooms and for a domestic environment. These can be floor mounted, wall mounted, etc.

The commercial condensation dehumidifier is used for a slightly bigger space with a slightly harsher environment. These could be for places like laboratories, spas, gym, museums, etc. These could be trolley type dehumidifiers which are movable and easy in terms of functionality, They also can be wall mounted or floor mounted. Commercial type units can also be ducted systems for various requirements.

The industrial condensation dehumidifier is for a harsh and rough environment. These units are used in warehouses, industries, factories, hospitals, data centre, etc. The industrial type dehumidifiers are mostly ducted or floor standing units. For few industrial applications, wall mounted type is also preferred. Swimming pool is one of the major application for a condensation dehumidifier.

Now, a Desiccant dehumidifier is a system which removes the humidity from the room in the form of wet air. A desiccant dehumidifier uses a silica gel filter and a rotor to separate the moisture content in the room and discards the same moisture content in the form of wet air. This wet air is discarded from the room through a pipe connection. The dry air is then pushed back into the room. This is the concept of a desiccant dehumidifier. The desiccant type is also called as the adsorption type dehumidifier. These units are specially used for lower and colder temperatures.

Desiccant Dehumidifier can be of the below types:

  1. Domestic type
  2. Industrial type

The domestic desiccant dehumidifier is mainly used for keeping small rooms dry especially when it is maintained at lower and cooler temperatures. These machines do not need a compressor or a cooling agent to dehumidify the air. It has efficient drying options through the desiccation technique. Applications for domestic desiccant dehumidifiers would be homes, walk in cabinets, etc.

The industrial desiccant dehumidifier is used for applications like cold rooms, freezers, etc. These units are for a much rugged environment and for low temperatures up to -25 degrees celsius. These units can be floor type but mainly ducted systems.

Both the condensation and the desiccant type dehumidifiers are selected based on a calculation where few parameters are considered such as,

  1. The dimension of the room (Length x Width x Height)
  2. Temperature maintained inside the room (Degree Celsius)
  3. Current Humidity level in the room (RH)
  4. Desired Humidity level in the room (RH)

Dehumidifiers are very essential in almost every industry today. As humidity is a growing concern, maintaining the correct level of RH is very important. High level of humidity attracts health problems, destruction of walls, minimizing the quality of certain products, etc. Using a dehumidifier in such conditions will solve the issue.

EGG STORAGE

Dehumidification is extremely important in a place where egg is stored. Dehumidification will stop the eggs from hatching before its due time. Dehumidifiers installed in such areas will take care of the maintained temperature and humidity In the rooms.

HOME DEHUMIDIFIER

A home dehumidifier has a capacity range anywhere between 8 liters per day to 50 liters per day. This depends on the dimensions of the room. To understand the best home dehumidifier and to select a suitable model, the capacity calculation has to be done.
